Learning How to Swim for Neurodivergent Children
April 15, 2026By Audrey
Hey fellow parents! When you think of a swim meet, you probably picture intense athletes, silent crowds, and a whole lot of pressure. But what if I told you there's a swimming competition designed specifically to bring your entire household together?
With the Aqua Champs League Fest (ACLF2026) coming up on 13 June 2026, I wanted to share why this event has become a non-negotiable, block-out-the-calendar family affair to us.

Taking the Challenge Together

Our family's ACLF journey started back in 2019. It was me, my two older kids, Isabelle and Josiah, and a whole lot of nerves. With the gentle nudge from our Swimin12 coach, I signed the kids up even though they were very fresh beginners. Isabelle's best was a 50m Breaststroke, and Josiah could only manage 25m. But they had a brilliant "Board and Fin" category that required zero advanced skills — just pure determination!
Then, the coach turned to me and suggested I jump in, "just for fun". Let me tell you, I was reluctant. I hadn't swam competitively since I was 12, and after having three kids, I had only just gotten back into the pool at 40. My confidence wasn't exactly at an all-time high. But I realized this was a rare chance to truly bond with my kids over a shared challenge. I took the plunge because I wanted to show them that we can all do hard things together, and that with hard work, anything is possible.

Navigating the Highs and Lows as a Team

Having your kids take part in a competition as novice swimmers is a masterclass in parenting. It helps them experience what a real competition is like, but in a totally safe space where they can learn to manage their stress and nerves.
That first year, Isabelle swam her heart out but didn't win a medal. It was a tough moment, but we huddled up, talked through the disappointment, and I got to encourage her. The best part about ACLF? Even though only the top three in a heat get medals, every single swimmer goes home with a prize. That little touch completely turned her frown upside down.
Then there was Josiah. He paddled his hardest and actually won a GOLD for his Board and Fin race! The unbelievable sense of achievement on his face, and the way Isabelle cheered for her little brother, was a bonding moment I will never forget.

Fun, Food and Friends!

The community vibe at the festival is so infectious that it goes way beyond just cheering by the pool. In 2023, I actually reconnected with an old classmate whose kids are also Swimin12 students taking part in the event. We got to talking and decided to team up this year to open our own little stall at the carnival! So yes, it really is all about families — and old friends! — getting together, pooling our energy, and soaking in that amazing festival atmosphere while the kids are busy making memories.

A Carnival for the Whole Crew
If you're worried about younger siblings getting bored on the sidelines, don't be. In 2019, my youngest, Benjamin, was only 3. He hadn't even started learning how to swim yet, but he was over the moon just to be there. ACLF is set up as a massive family festival with game booths, water play, and activities everywhere you look. It kept him thoroughly entertained while we took turns racing.
Fast forward through three more ACLFs, and the older two have since graduated from the Swimin12 Guaranteed program. Last year at ACLF2025, the family tradition continued with Benjamin. it was his second competition, and despite his nerves, he snagged 1 Silver and 1 Bronze — completely blowing his own expectations out of the water!
We spent the rest of the day hitting the festival booths together, playing games, and we even walked away with a lucky draw prize. It was just the most fun, stress-free bonding time a mother could ask for.

Join the Family Fun at ACLF2026
This year is the event's 9th year running, and whether your family is full of seasoned splashers or total beginners, there is a spot for you.
- It's Open to the Public: You don't need to be a Swimin12 student. Anyone aged 4 and up can join!
- Truly Inclusive: They have an Inclusive Category for participants with special needs, and an Open Category for the adults (fun fact: the oldest participant they've ever had was 86!)
- Confidence First: It's the perfect environment to help kids get race-ready without the overwhelming pressure of a traditional meet.
And hey, even if you aren't there for the swim meet itself, you can still be a huge part of the day by helping to feed a few hundred hungry kids (and us tired parents!). If you run a local food business, we'd love to have you at the festival. Apply as an official F&B Vendor for ACLF2026.
So grab your goggles, rally your kids, and maybe even sign yourself up. I promise you, making ACLF a family affair is a decision you won't regret. See you at the pool on June 13th!
