Pushed, Not Taught: Why Fear-Based Swimming Lessons Don’t Work
November 21, 2025By Coach Shakinaz
A few days ago, I received heartbreaking news. One of my son's classmates drowned while playing at Pantai Penunjuk in Terengganu. They were just kids enjoying the waves, unaware of how strong currents can be.
When I told my son what had happened, he paused and quietly said,
“If only she had learned swimming, maybe she could have breathe-glided back to the beach.”
That moment broke my heart. But it also reminded me of why I teach and why I believe that learning to swim isn’t just about fun or recreation. It’s about survival, confidence, and respect for the water.
Why Learning to Swim Matters More Than Ever
Many people assume swimming lessons are only for those who want to swim in a pool. But water is everywhere such as in beaches, rivers, waterfalls, and even floods.
At Swimin12, we believe that a swim school you can trust must teach more than just technique. Our mission is to prepare students for real-world water environments and different situations. Whether you’re caught in a current or face sudden waves, knowing how to breathe, float, and glide can make all the difference.
Swimming builds strength, calmness, and focus especially when it’s taught with purpose.
Overcoming Fear: Learning to Swim With Confidence
As a water phobia specialist, I’ve taught many children and adults who once said, “I’m scared of water.” Some couldn’t even put their faces in the pool at first. But over time, with patience and understanding, I’ve seen tears turn into smiles and fear turn into freedom.
Every small step counts, from touching the water to learning to float and glide. The goal isn’t to rush; it’s to help every swimmer feel safe and in control. Because once that happens, they’re not just learning to swim, they’re learning courage.
Learning for Life: The Swimin12 Way
At Swimin12, our philosophy goes beyond swimming pools. We teach students how to respond in various water environments, understanding how waves, depth, and flow behave differently. This approach ensures that swimmers aren’t just good in the pool, but capable and confident wherever water exists.
Our programs are designed for all ages — from young children to adults — and guided by certified coaches who believe that everyone deserves to feel safe in water. That’s what makes us a swim school that you can trust.
A Message to Parents
As parents, we spend so much time ensuring our children succeed academically. But swimming is a life skill and it is one that could one day save their lives or someone else’s.
Please, if you haven’t yet, give your child the opportunity to learn to swim. Not just for recreation, but for confidence, safety, and peace of mind.
Because at the end of the day, swimming is about movement and it’s also freedom, survival, and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing what to do when it matters most.
